Cloud Engineer Interview Questions and Answers
Last updated: January 30, 2026Type of Questions to Expect in a Cloud Engineer Interview
- Cloud Architecture: "How would you design a system to handle a sudden 500% spike in traffic while maintaining 99.9% uptime?"
- Storage & Databases: "When would you choose an S3 bucket (Object Storage) over an EBS volume (Block Storage)?"
- Security & IAM: "Explain the principle of 'Least Privilege' and how you would apply it using Identity and Access Management (IAM) roles."
- Networking: "What is the difference between a Public Subnet and a Private Subnet in a Virtual Private Cloud (VPC)?"
- Containers & Orchestration: "How does Kubernetes help in managing microservices, and what is the role of a 'Pod'?"
What the Interviewer Will Expect
- Automation Mindset: Do you prefer manual setup, or do you use tools like Terraform, CloudFormation, or Ansible to automate infrastructure?
- Cost Management: Can you design a system that is powerful but doesn't waste the company's money on unused resources?
- Security-First Approach: Is security an afterthought, or is it baked into every layer of your networking and access design?
- Problem-Solving Speed: When a service goes down, can you use logs and monitoring tools (like CloudWatch or Prometheus) to find the root cause quickly?
- Platform Knowledge: While the concepts are similar, they will expect deep knowledge of their specific provider (AWS, Microsoft Azure, or Google Cloud Platform).
Tips on Getting Ready
- Brush Up on Networking: Review DNS, Load Balancing, VPC Peering, and CDNs. You cannot be a great Cloud Engineer without a strong grasp of networking.
- Practice "Whiteboard" Architecture: Be ready to draw a cloud diagram on a screen or board, explaining how data flows from the user to the database.
- Review the "Shared Responsibility" Model: Know exactly what the cloud provider is responsible for versus what you are responsible for (security of the cloud vs. security in the cloud).
- Prepare a Migration Story: Use the STAR method to describe a time you moved a service to the cloud or optimized a "cloud-heavy" bill to save costs.
- Stay Current on Certifications: If you have an AWS Solutions Architect or Azure Admin cert, be ready to discuss the specific services you studied.
